Music: The Only Good Thing to Come Out of 2020

Like many others across the country, I have been holed up in my home since March, only ever leaving to go to work or go grocery shopping. My already limited social bubble has gotten smaller within the confines of this global pandemic, and, quite frankly, I have been slowly losing my mind over the past seven months. There hasn't been much that has sparked joy within me during this time period; the days seem to either fly by or crawl slowly towards completion of another sleepless night. The one thing I have left to hold onto, to keep my mind at bay during these troubled times, is music.

Music, for me, has always been an integral part of my being. I have built my life around it, gained wonderful memories because of it, and have traveled the country, visiting new and exciting places to hear it performed live. Living through a pandemic that has almost completely snuffed out the possibility of any live concerts for the near future, has been a reality that I am having trouble handling. From the ages of 14 to my current age of 22, my entire reason for living has been for those two hours, squished and sweaty in a packed club full of strangers, and singing my heart out in front of a live band.

Covid-19 took all of this away. This brings me to why I am here, pouring my heart out to a computer screen. I write all of this to say: I miss music, I really do. However, I still have hope for the future, and I have hope that live music will someday make a comeback.

In the meantime, while we are all still at home, why don't we celebrate the music that has been released this year, and the things many musicians have done to create as close to a live environment as possible, but on a virtual scale? I want this blog to be a safe space for music lovers, those who want to find new artists to listen to, and for those who just want to celebrate the best the medium has to offer.

I would like this blog to be geared towards music, specifically music that has been released during the pandemic. I plan on writing about a few artists I admire who have put out music in 2020, but I also plan on broadening my horizons and writing about other artists that are still creating during these pressing times, when, honestly, most people have been too emotionally drained to create art/music.

I hope this blog creates an honest discussion about music, the effect this pandemic has had on our psyches, and how we are finding ways to cope with everything through music. I encourage readers to comment on anything they feel free to, and, if you feel so inclined, you can give my art instagram (I mainly create art based on musicians/music) a follow. I hope to hear from you all soon!

  1. Kris, what a cool way to help others get through this weird time. As we are spending less time in public and more at home, what better way to pass time than listen to some sick new jams. I look forward to your recommendations. Additionally, I am really vibing your insta!

  2. I was really looking forward to actually going to music festivals and concerts this year, but then pandemic happened, so I feel this pain. Hopefully when all of this is over we can go back to these fun times. You clipped some awesome photos to the post, do you have any pictures like this in your camera roll or social media? Also your Instagram is super cool! I gave it a follow.

    1. Thank you! The images I credited aren't mine (I seldom take footage during concerts in recent years) but the last photo is from a concert I actually attended so it felt nice to look back on it and allow myself a bit of nostalgia! I might post some older footage I've taken in the past in my next post!

    2. I absolutely love this concept for a blog. 2020 has been really weird so far and I often look to music as an escape some times. I am looking forward to reading about your recommendations. I feel like I get stuck in the same songs, and I'm always willing to try something new.

  4. The first thing when I thought when I saw your blog was "Why didn't I think of that?." I absolutely love music but have always been in my own bubble, never really checking genres outside of my typical few. I'm looking forward to checking out what you have to say on the topic of music, and hopefully I'll find some new additions to my own playlist through this.

  5. I was so looking forward to going to go see Green Day this summer and I couldn't because of the pandemic. I'm excited to see some of the music you recommend/any concerts you've been to. I absolutely adore your art Instagram page, your work is amazing! New recommedations would be great. The only album I've listened to this year has been The Neighbourhood's album "Chip Chrome and The Monotones". I'm excited to see what else you'll put out next!
